Kevin wins big race.....

AT THE DOUBLE!

REIGNING champion Kevin Hoult made it a double triumph in Rowbotham's Round Rotherham grueller, running to a new personal best ahead of local ace Kevin Doyle. . The Stadium Runners man from Huddersfield improved on his 2015 time by an impressive 19 minutes over the 50-mile distance while Kimberworth Strider Doyle finished strongly to take the runners-up slot. At Woodsetts, the 30 mile mark Hoult led while following in hot pursuit just eight minutes behind was Ken Sutor from Cheshire Hash House Harriers, with Doyle following on 14 minutes later. Hoult held on to clock 6 hours 29 minutes, while Sutor ran out of steam to eventually finish eighth. Doyle kept up his momentum to claim second in 7:27 while Martin Terry followed in third place 15 minutes later. In the ladies' race last year's joint winners Lizzie Hutson and Susan Keens opted to run in the relays, leaving the event wide open. 2013 winner Karen Nash (Runfurther) showed the way by winning in 8:35, ahead of Tara Spillings (unattached) in 8:51. Lisa Walbridge (100 Marathon Club) was just 30 seconds behind in third. First team trophies were awarded once again to dominant Kimberworth Striders, who also picked up the winning team trophy in 2013, 2014 and 2015. One hundred and ninety three runners and walkers finished the event with 30 retirees. Many of these were first timers not aware of the strict time limits imposed. The first Rotherham Harrier home, collecting the Ralph Rowbotham Trophy, was Andrew Roscamp in his second year of completing the course. He improved his time by almost ten minutes from the year before. Harriers' chairman Stephen Cotter took it upon himself to organise a very strong men's team to challenge the usual strong team from Clowne Road Runners. Friendly banter and rivalry in the few days leading up to the race was started by Clowne who realised that their team had a race on their hands. That's how it turned out as Rotherham finished first in 5:16, three minutes short of the October record set by Clowne in 2012. Harriers finished 12 minutes ahead. The ladies winning team was 7 Fast, 1 Furious (Kimberworth Striders) who were eighth overall in 6:32. Striders Ladies A also took first place in their category in 6:32. The mixed team winners were Wildhogs (Handsworth Roadhogs), who were third overall in 5:59. Said senior organiser Sharon Burton: "The camaraderie and team spirit on the day is amazing. As usual, many, many thanks go to the volunteers that make it happen and put in a tremendous amount of time, effort and commitment to make it successful on the day. "In particular, the checkpoint officials who are always friendly, helpful and accommodating to the runners, walkers and relay teams. A special mention also must go to my team of Brian Harney, Jim Brogan, Kevin Thomas and Henry Marston who put in hours of work leading up to the event to make it the success that it is."
